On the entrance staircase and in the courtyard of the Luketina family home at 16 Kralja Zvonimira Street, Makarska, right in the very center of town (near Glavica Park and the observatory), lies a true little artistic treasure – a unique mosaic made of sea pebbles. This valuable work was created by the late Miroslav Luketina, an amateur artist and lover of the sea, stone, and tradition.
This is an exceptional example of a mosaic made from natural pebbles of the Adriatic – and very likely the only such mosaic in the wider region. For more than six decades, this mosaic has spontaneously caught the eye of passers-by, especially tourists who admire its beauty and originality. Its uniqueness has been documented in numerous domestic and international television reports as well as newspaper articles.
In 2025, the tenth anniversary of the death of Mr. Miroslav Luketina is being marked. Born in 1917, he remained faithful to his artistic creation until the very end of his life. He passed away in 2015 at the age of 99.
The creation of the mosaic began about 60 years ago, with the last pieces added only a few years before Luketina’s death. Thus, some parts of the mosaic are now a full six decades old, while the youngest are just about ten years old.
We invite all lovers of art, the sea, and authentic stories to visit this quiet yet deeply impressive artistic spot during their stay in Makarska – a place where stone tells a story.
You are welcome to explore the mosaics freely between 7 a.m. and 11 p.m.
